Nematic esters of the formula ##SPC1##
Wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxy or alkoxyalkoxy of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, X is CN or NO.sub.2 and Y is H or X which are useful for influencing the electrooptic properties of other nematic compositions.
