Azo dyes are transferred from a substrate to a plastic-coated paper by diffusion with the aid of a thermal printing head, these azo dyes having the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently of the other hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted phenyl,
