In a process for producing a polymer or copolymer of a vinyl chloride monomer with or without a comonomer by aqueous suspension polymerization or copolymerization in the presence of a suspension stabilizer and a polymerization initiator which is insoluble or sparingly soluble in water and soluble in the monomer; the improvement wherein the polymerization or copolymerization is carried out in the presence of, as said suspension stabilizer, a hydrotalcite compound of the following formula
