ABSTRACT:
An image processing apparatus such as a laser beam printer or an ink jet printer can reproduce halftone images with a high resolution and a high gradation. Four subelements of an 8.times.8 matrix picture element which correspond to low gray levels are further divided into small regions. Threshold levels 1 to 4 are set in these regions of each of the divided subelements, respectively. The density of a black dot corresponding to the subelement is changed by pulse width modulation or the like. The reproduced dot pattern has a substantially constant dot pitch.
