ABSTRACT:
A process for converting sulfolene compounds to sulfolane compounds comprising contacting at least one sulfolene compound with hydrogen in the presence of a metal hydrogenation catalyst and an effective amount of an SO.sub.2 neutralizer or scavenger comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypohalite salt and optionally a tertiary amine. In one embodiment the sulfolene feed is pretreated with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypohalite salt prior to being subjected to hydrogenation to neutralize residual sulfur compounds in the feed thereby minimizing catalyst poisoning.
