ABSTRACT:
Anthraquinones are prepared by reacting a 1,4-naphthoquinone with trans-1-acetoxybutadiene in a polar solvent at a temperature of from 30.degree. to 60.degree. C, optionally in the presence of acetic acid. 1-acetoxy-1,4,4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinone is produced which is then treated with oxygen at temperatures of 100.degree. to 130.degree. C without isolation, optionally after adding a salt of acetic acid or a compound which forms an acetic acid salt under the reaction conditions.
