ABSTRACT:
A seal construction is provided for sealing a rotating shaft against passage of a fluid along its central axis. The sealed construction includes a sealing flange fixedly mounted on the shaft and rotatable with the shaft. The sealing flange has a forward and rear surface extending radially from the central axis of the rotating shaft, the forward surface of which is exposed to the fluid to be sealed against. There is then provided a stationary sealing mechanism for creating a fluid seal between the rear surface of the rotatable sealing flange and this stationary sealing mechanism. A diaphragm is then provided across a fluid passageway associated with the rear surface of the stationary sealing mechanism in such a way such that any increase in pressure in the fluid to be sealed against upon the diaphragm will cause the diaphragm to flex radially inwardly, thereby increasing the area of the rear surface of the engaging member exposed to the fluid pressure which then further urges a tighter seal.
