ABSTRACT:
The fluid catalytic cracking of a residual oil fraction comprising metal contaminants and/or asphaltene type coke formers is processed by injecting the oil into the upper portion of a riser cracking operation under conditions to effect partial conversion thereof over a catalyst inactivated by carbonaceous deposits. A 650.degree.0 F. plus product of the low severity cracking is passed in contact with freshly regenerated catalyst under conditions of high conversion severity in the lower portion of the riser.
