ABSTRACT:
An optically active compound having characteristics necessary for realizing liquid crystal compositions provided with suitable characteristics, particularly a negative temperature characteristic and a very high twistability, and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound are provided, which optically active compound is expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are 1-20 C alkyl or alkoxy or H; l, m and n are 0 or 1; X is F, Cl, Br or CN; and ##STR2## each independently represent ##STR3## wherein Y is H, halogen or CN.
