ABSTRACT:
A process is described for the synthesis of hydroxy lactone 3, being 1R, 2R, 5R-2-hydroxy-6-oxo-7-oxabicyclo[3.2.1]-octane, in optically pure form, which is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of the C.sub.20 -C.sub.34 chain of the macrolide structure for the immunosuppressant FK-506. This compound is also useful as a precursor for producing an ultraviolet radiation absorber.
