The invention relates to chromogenic 3,3-bisindolyl-4-azaphthalides of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Y.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, cyano or lower alkoxy, or is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 acyl, benzyl or benzyl substituted halogen, nitro, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy,
