The present invention relates to novel polymers which are sulfomaleic anhydride adducts of an unsaturated hydrocarbon, wherein the novel polymers are produced by contacting sulfomaleic anhydride or derivatives with an unsaturated hydrocarbon to form the novel polymer, which has a M.sub.n of about 900 to about 10.sup.7.
