ABSTRACT:
Imidazoles of the formula ##STR1## are prepared by treating a ketone ##STR2## with a nitrogenic acid, nitrite or nitrate in the presence of an acid to form a hydroxynitrile ##STR3## which is treated with R.sup.2 --CHO and an ammonium to form an N-hydroxyimidazole ##STR4## which is reduced in the presence of a buffer. In these compounds, R.sup.1 is hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aryl or aralkyl;
