ABSTRACT:
The device for computing the pseudo-variance ##EQU1## of the N instantaneous periods P.sub.i of an alternating-current signal S.sub.e and especially for detecting a signal in the presence of noise comprises means for detecting the sign of the difference P.sub.i+1 -P.sub.i, means for adding the quantity 2(P.sub.i+1 -P.sub.i) to the quantity ##EQU2## (with 1.ltoreq.j.ltoreq.i and P.sub.j+1 -P.sub.j) when P.sub.i+1 is greater than P.sub.i, and means for subtracting the value P.sub.N from the value ##EQU3## (with P.sub.i+1 >P.sub.i), the pseudo-variance to be determined being provided by the subtraction means.
