ABSTRACT:
An electrolysis cell comprising a cell housing containing at least one pair of oppositely charged electrodes separated by an ion exchange diaphragm characterized in that at least one of said electrodes comprises an electrodically charged electroconductive element, screen or plate spaced from the diaphragm by a resilient compressible mat, said mat being open to gas and electrolyte flow, resistant to the cell environment and capable when compressed of distributing pressure laterally along the diaphragm and a novel method of generating halogen by electrolysis of a halide containing electrolyte.
