ABSTRACT:
##STR1## Single enantiomers of chiral sultams having general formula (I), where the R groups are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, and the R.sup.1 group is C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 alkyl, in substantially optically pure form are provided. The single enantiomers may be acylated to yield derivatives which are efficient chiral auxiliaries for asymmetric electrophilic substitutions at saturated carbon, Michael additions and Diels-Alder reactions.
