ABSTRACT:
The invention is a novel class of phthalimido derivatives represented by a formula: ##STR1## wherein W is hydrogen or alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 ; X and X' each represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4, CF.sub.3, alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4), benzyloxy, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkylamino, C.sub.1 C.sub.4 alkylthio, hydroxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylsulfonyl, alkanoylamino C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 or nitro; Y is --COOR.sub.3, --CONHR.sub.8, --CONR.sub.3 R.sub.4, --CONHN(R.sub.5).sub.2, --CONHN.sup.+(R.sub.6).sub.3 . halide.sup.-, --CN or --CCR.sub.7 with the proviso that at least one of X and X' is a substituent other than hydrogen; R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represent alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 or when taken together with the carbon to which they are attached form cycloalkyl C.sub.4 -C.sub.11 optionally substituted with methyl; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 each represent hydrogen or alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 ; R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 each represent alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 ; R.sub.7 is halogen and R.sub.8 is --CH.sub.3 or ##STR2## where Z and Z' are hydrogen, alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.2, halogen, --CF.sub.3 or --OCH.sub.3, - - - is a single or double bond with the proviso that there be only 0 or 1 double bond in the ring and a method for regulating the growth of plants with these compounds and with compounds having the above structure wherein X and X' each represent hydrogen.
