ABSTRACT:
A process for the selective removal of nitrogen oxides from waste gases containing sulfur oxides as well as nitrogen oxides, which comprises contacting the waste gases with a catalyst comprising active metal oxides consisting of vanadium oxide and at least one of molybdenum oxide and tungsten oxide as a catalytically active component and .alpha.-alumina having a specific surface area of 0.3 to 12 m.sup.2 /g and a pore volume of 0.1 cm.sup.3 /g or more as a carrier wherein the atomic ratio of the vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten and aluminum contained in the carrier alumina is
