ABSTRACT:
Monolithic Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 ceramic bodies having a lower density outer layer are produced by a one-step sintering in an ambient atmosphere of water vapor and a nonreactive diluent gas, and are useful, for example, as abradable seal and impact resistant structural elements.
