ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of benzaldehydes of the general ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl, wherein a compound of the formula ##STR2## where X is hydrogen, hydroxyl or R.sup.2 --COO--, and R.sup.2 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, is oxidized electrochemically in the presence of water, of an alkanoic acid of the formula
