ABSTRACT:
There is disclosed a simple, economical process for preparing 2,5-dimethyl-3-(2H)-furanone by hydrolysis of the dimer of diacetyl at a temperature of 20.degree.C to 120.degree.C and in the presence of an acid, mineral or organic, or of a cationic resin, with elimination of a acetic acid.
