This method was used to ensure the contents of the vessel remained sterial during the process, thus ensuring the safety of the end user. Previously, samples of each batch would have to be stored to allow bacteria to grow, and then tested. If bacteria was present, the entire batch would have to be distroyed. This has saved industry the expense of the burdensome task of storage and testing and possible having to distroy an entire batch. This also promotes the safety of a product and the confidence that it will remain sterial for the lifecycle of the product. This was a win for everyone.
